Wake Up, Industry!

Degree or NO Degree? That is the question!

Can I just touch on an extremely important aspect of the job search, hiring and interview process?

I have seen/experienced two different sides of this.

My degree actually has done nothing for me in-regards to getting me to the next level of my career. Everything I am doing now, I did not learn in college. My actual experience was everything to the companies that were trying to hire me. Plus, they were willing to take a chance on me.

A close friend of mine had the exact opposite experience. Recruiters turned her down and her company would not pay her more because she did not have a degree. One recruiter even said “I don’t work with candidates who don’t have a degree” – ok, rude. Your loss.

In my opinion, the degree does NOT matter. When did hard work and years of experience start going unnoticed?

If you are a recruiter or a company that is hiring, and you turn down a person seeking a new job because they don’t have a degree… SHAME. ON. YOU.

  1. Part of your job as a recruiter is to help present your candidate as their best professional self and highlight their strengths on their written resume and in their online presence.
  2. If you are focusing on the CON(s) of their experience history then you will lose out on a lot of money, making a difference in the lives of GREAT candidates, and filtering the right people into the industry or your company.

I don’t care where you come from, or what degree you have or don’t – as long as you know the job and do it well; I believe in YOU.

I know what I am capable of with or without my degree. The company I work for saw it too.

Wake Up, Industry! See your candidates’ worth. Their true worth – without the degree. That will always steer you in the right direction.

  1. Love this!! ❤️ I totally agree with this for certain types of jobs, but of course some I think you do 100% need the proper schooling- like most health care jobs. I know this post is probably not aimed towards that industry though.
